“Over the past year and a half I have been training Functional Patterns with Austin Jordan. When we first started working together I could barely walk let alone stand. Back in 2018 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune arthritis that badly damaged my muscles, joints, fascia and other tissues. I went from a high performing athlete to someone that could barely get out of bed. I struggled with this for about a year before I saw Austin sharing information about Functional Patterns on social media. At this point all I could think about was healing myself so that I could go back to the same dysfunctional bench press, barbell squat and barbell deadlift that had made my arthritis worse. I was in so much pain and every day was a battle to get through. I met Austin for a session and he went over basic decompression exercises with me. This gave my spine, hips and other areas much relief. Not only did he teach me exercises that helped, but he also dove deep into the philosophy of FP. He talked about the importance of the fascial membranes and how they can be manipulated both negatively and positively by the autonomic nervous system. It was this that made me realize the bodybuilding mindset that I previously had was wreaking havoc on my autonomic nervous system along with my other tissues. Austin taught me how functional movement is the ultimate biohack and regulatory tool to heal the body. After about 2 months of decompression, rotational work and myofascial release I felt like I was on a much clearer path to healing. I would leave our workouts not in any more pain then when I started, this was such a new thing for me. I finally found a way to move my body in a way that doesn't unnecessarily put stress on the wrong area. Now, a year and a half in, I have gained around 20 pounds of muscle back, my eating disorder due to food sensitivities has reduced and I feel much more functional all around (Before: March 18th 2020 After: August 11th 2021)
